Cypress Systems has two choices of Reference electrodes

66-EE008 - Miniature TeflonŽ Ag/AgCl Reference Electrode

Easy Maintenance    Options    Specifications

An example of an 66-EE008 electrode.

The most popular Ag/AgCl miniature reference electrode 66-EE008 is easy to use. The barrel is made of clear TeflonŽ, which makes it easy to view the level of the internal filling solution. The cap, white opaque TeflonŽ, can be unscrewed to fill the barrel. The barrel can also be filled with your non-aqueous solvent and used as a non-aqueous reference. The design of this reference electrode works seamlessly with our mini-cell 66-CL008 and mini-electrodes.

Easy maintenance for standard junction barrel

If the junction becomes dried out and blocked with KCl crystals, it can easily be reactivated by soaking in warm water for 30 minutes. Storing the 66-EE008 in KCl solution or water is recommended when itis not in use. The standard juction is porous so that small amounts of KCl can leak from the barrel of the reference electrode. If this is not desirable for your studies, the "fiber junction" would be a better choice.

Optional - leak resistant fiber junction barrel

The "fiber junction" is an optional configuration for the 66-EE008. A piece of glass with a small fiber in the middle is used as the junction. It will greatly reduce the leakage of the 3 M KCl. However, it is not easily reactivated as the standard barrel. It is important to keep the fiber junction stored in KCl solution or distilled water. The fiber junction has a resistance around 10 MΩ (the resistance of the standard junction is ~ 1 MΩ). It is recommended to store both types of barrels in KCl solution or distilled water when not in use.

66-EE009 a premium "no-leak" Ag/AgCl reference electrode

Easy Maintenance    Options    Specifications

An example of an 66-EE009 electrode.

No need to worry about silver or chloride contaminations in your samples. 66-EE009 has a unique junction and has a barrel made of premium quality PEEK* for superior chemical resistance and leakage prevention. Organic solvents tested include alcohols, ketones, and esters. Additionally, DMSO, MEK and dichloromethane have been tested for up to 48 hours without any deleterious effect. It can be stored for long periods if the tip (junction) is capped or soaked in 3M KCl or distilled water. The junction resistance is < 10 kΩ. Although not recommended, the effective applications of the 66-EE009 in hydrofluoric acid solutions were reported because the electrode is not made of glass.

Easy maintenance

It could be stored for long periods if the tip (junction) is capped or soaked in 3M KCl or distilled water.

To reactivate an 66-EE009 reference if a potential shift is observed, the potential can be shifted back (not always however) by subjecting the reference to high positive potential, 4V, in a two electrode system in an electrolyte solution for 10-15 seconds then waiting 30 seconds for stabilization. The other electrode can be a wire, carbon rod, etc.

Another possibility for a shift in potential is the adsorption of some material on the electrodes junction. Careful polishing on fine sand paper or immersing in strong acid (6M H2SO4) for 30 minutes then sonicating may solve this type of problem.
